Mike Doyle’s first experiences of awe and inspiration with the ocean would lead to a legendary, storied life of one of modern history’s original watermen. Mike purchased his first surfboard from Hap Jacobs and Dale Velzy in 1954 from their shop underneath the Manhattan Beach Pier and never looked back. Over the course of the next three decades, Mike dedicated himself to a life in, on and around the water, learning the ways of the ocean, how it moves and how to move with it on surfboards, paddleboards and boats of all shapes and sizes. That same amazement and curiosity would also evoke the craftsman in him to understand how every detail of a board, no matter how subtle, would react to the surface of the water moving all around it. His quest to marry nature’s raw power and beauty with his own wonder and creativity would ultimately lead to the birth of some of the world’s most innovative and enduring board sports concepts. His passion for truly living life to the fullest and a persistent wonder with the ocean continue to inspire the Doyle brand today.
